Day,meantime,althoughfullblownandradiantonthemountainsummitsaroundus,wasyetnebulousanduncertaininthevalleysintowhichwewereplunging。Lightsstillglimmeredinthecabinsandfewranchbuildingswhichbegantoindicatethethickersettlements。Andtheshadowswereheaviestinalittlecopse,whereanotefromJudgeThompsoninthecoachwashandeduptoYubaBill,whoatonceslowlybegantodrawuphishorses。Thecoachstoppedfinallynearthejunctionofasmallcrossroad。AtthesamemomentMissMullinsslippeddownfromthevehicle,and,withapartingwaveofherhandtotheJudge,whohadassistedherfromthesteps,trippeddownthecrossroad,anddisappearedinitssemi-

Thelatterwasleading,withsomeelaborationofmanneranddetail,theshapelyfigureofMissMullins,andYubaBillwasaccompanyinghercompaniontothebuggy。Weallrushedtothewindowstogetagoodviewofthemysteriousstrangerandprobableex-brigandwhoselifewasnowlinkedwithourfairfellow-passenger。Iamafraid,however,thatweallparticipatedinacertainimpressionofdisappointmentanddoubt。Handsomeandevencultivated-looking,heassuredlywas——youngandvigorousinappearance。Buttherewasacertainhalf-shamed,half-defiantsuggestioninhisexpression,yetcoupledwithawatchfullurkinguneasinesswhichwasnotpleasantandhardlybecominginabridegroom——andthepossessorofsuchabride。Butthefrank,joyous,innocentfaceofPollyMullins,resplendentwithasimple,happyconfidence,meltedourheartsagain,andcondonedthefellow\'sshortcomings。Wewavedourhands;
