Dotheynotmeasureareasroundthesuneverproportionedtothetimes?Sofixed,soimmutablearethelawsbywhichtheunseenAuthorofnatureactuatestheuniverse。{211}Howvividandradiantisthelustreofthefixedstars!Howmagnificentandrichthatnegligentprofusionwithwhichtheyappeartobescatteredthroughoutthewholeazurevault!Yet,ifyoutakethetelescope,itbringsintoyoursightanewhostofstarsthatescapethenakedeye。Heretheyseemcontiguousandminute,buttoanearerviewimmenseorbsoffightatvariousdistances,farsunkintheabyssofspace。Nowyoumustcallimaginationtoyouraid。Thefeeblenarrowsensecannotdescryinnumerableworldsrevolvingroundthecentralfires;andinthoseworldstheenergyofanall-perfectMinddisplayedinendlessforms。But,neithersensenorimaginationarebigenoughtocomprehendtheboundlessextent,withallitsglitteringfurniture。Thoughthelabouringmindexertandstraineachpowertoitsutmostreach,therestillstandsoutungraspedasurplusageimmeasurable。Yetallthevastbodiesthatcomposethismightyframe,howdistantandremotesoever,arebysomesecretmechanism,someDivineartandforce,linkedinamutualdependenceandintercoursewitheachother;

evenwiththisearth,whichwasalmostsliptfrommythoughtsandlostinthecrowdofworlds。Isnotthewholesystemimmense,beautiful,gloriousbeyondexpressionandbeyondthought!Whattreatment,then,dothosephilosophersdeserve,whowoulddeprivethesenobleanddelightfulscenesofall?HowshouldthosePrinciplesbeentertainedthatleadustothinkallthevisiblebeautyofthecreationafalseimaginaryglare?Tobeplain,canyouexpectthisScepticismofyourswillnotbethoughtextravagantlyabsurdbyallmenofsense?
