deafnessatthecommencement;therewasnosleep;notverythirsty;

urinethickandred,whenallowedtostanditdidnotsubside;

Explanationofthecharacters。Itisprobablythatitwasthesuppressionofthedischargesfromthebowelswhichoccasioneddeathonthetwenty—seventhday。

CASEIII。ThemanwhowaslodgedintheGardenofDealces:hadheavinessoftheheadandpainintherighttempleforaconsiderabletime,fromsomeaccidentalcause,wasseizedwithfever,andtooktobed。Onthesecond,therewasatricklingofpurebloodfromtheleftnostril,butthealvinedischargeswereproper,urinethin,mixed,havingsmallsubstancesfloatinginit,likecoarsebarleymeal,orsemen。Onthethird,acutefever;stoolsblack,thin,frothy,alividsedimentinthedejections;slightcoma;

uneasinessatthetimeshehadtogetup;sedimentintheurinelivid,andsomewhatviscid。Onthefourth,slightvomitingofbilious,yellowmatters,and,afterashortinterval,ofthecolorofverdigris;afewdropsofpurebloodranfromtheleftnostril;stoolsthesame;

urinethesame;sweatedabouttheheadandclavicles;spleenenlarged,painofthethighonthesameside;looseswellingoftherighthypochondrium;atnighthadnosleep,slightdelirium。Onthesixth,stoolsblack,fatty,viscid,fetid;slept,morecollected。Ontheseventh,tonguedry,thirsty,didnotsleep;wassomewhatdelirious;

urinethin,notofagoodcolor。Ontheeighth,stoolsblack,scanty,andcompact;slept,becamecollected;notverythirsty。Ontheninthhadarigor,acutefever,sweated,achill,wasdelirious,strabismusoftherighteye,tonguedry,thirsty,withoutsleep。Onthetenth,muchthesame。Ontheeleventh,becamequitecollected;

freefromfever,slept,urinethinaboutthecrisis。Thetwofollowingdayswithoutfever;itreturnedonthefourteenth,thenimmediatelyinsomnolencyandcompletedelirium。Onthefifteenth,urinemuddy,likethatwhichhasbeenshakenafterthesedimenthasfallentothebottom;acutefever,quitedelirious,didnotsleep;kneesandlegspainful;afterasuppository,hadalvinedejectionsofablackcolor。Onthesixteenth,urinethin,hadacloudyeneorema,wasdelirious。Ontheseventeenth,inthemorning,extremitiescold,wascoveredupwiththebedclothes,acutefever,generalsweat,feltrelieved,morecollected;notfreeoffever,thirsty,vomitedyellowbile,insmallquantities;formedfaecespassedfromthebowels,butsoonafterwardsblack,scanty,andthin;urinethin,notwellcolored。

Ontheeighteenth,notcollected,comatose。Onthenineteenth,inthesamestate。Onthetwentieth,slept;quitecollected,sweated,freefromfever,notthirsty,buttheurinethin。Onthetwenty—first,slightdelirium;somewhatthirsty,painofthehypochondrium,andthrobbingaboutthenavelthroughout。Onsedimentintheurine,quitecollected。Twenty—seventh,painoftherighthipjoint;urinethinandbad,asediment;alltheothersymptomsmilder。Aboutthetwenty—ninth,painoftherighteye;urinethin。Fortieth,dejectionspituitous,white,ratherfrequent;sweatedabundantlyallover;hadacompletecrisis。

Explanationofthecharacters。Itisprobablethat,bymeansofthestools,theurine,andthesweat,thispatientwascuredinfortydays。

CASEI。InThasus,Philisteshadheadacheoflongcontinuance,andsometimeswasconfinedtobed,withatendencytodeepsleep;havingbeenseizedwithcontinualfeversfromdrinking,thepainwasexacerbated;duringthenighthe,atfirst,becamehot。Onthefirstday,hevomitedsomebiliousmatters,atfirstyellow,butafterwardsofaverdigris—greencolor,andingreaterquantity;formedfaecespassedfromthebowels;passedthenightuncomfortably。Onthesecond,deafness,acutefever;retractionoftherighthypochondrium;urinethin,transparent,hadsomesmallsubstanceslikesemenfloatinginit;deliriumferoxaboutmid—day。Onthethird,inanuncomfortablestate。Onthefourth,convulsions;allthesymptomsexacerbated。Onthefifth,earlyinthemorning,died。
