Hesometimesbroughtwithhimatamecrow,ashrewd,knavish—lookingbird,who,wheninthehumorforit,couldtalklikeBarnabyRudge’sraven。Heusedtosayhecould\"donothin’atexhortin’withoutawhitehandkercheronhisneckandmoneyinhispocket,\"——afactgoingfartoconfirmtheopinionsoftheBishopofExeterandthePuseyitesgenerally,thattherecanbenopriestwithouttithesandsurplice。

Thesepeoplehaveforseveralgenerationsliveddistinctfromthegreatmassofthecommunity,likethegypsiesofEurope,whominmanyrespectstheycloselyresemble。Theyhavethesamesettledaversiontolaborandthesamedispositiontoavailthemselvesofthefruitsoftheindustryofothers。Theyloveawild,out—of—doorlife,singsongs,tellfortunes,andhaveaninstinctivehatredof\"missionariesandcoldwater。\"Ithasbeensaid——Iknownotuponwhatgrounds——thattheirancestorswereindeedaveritableimportationofEnglishgypsyhood;butifso,theyhaveundoubtedlylostagooddealofthepicturesquecharmofitsunhousedandfreecondition。IverymuchfearthatmyfriendMaryRussellMitford,——sweetestofEngland’sruralpainters,——whohasapoet’seyeforthefinepointsingypsycharacter,wouldscarcelyallowtheirclaimstofraternitywithherownvagrantfriends,whosecamp—fireswelcomedhertohernewhomeatSwallowfield。(1)
