MEMOIR
Mr。BraywasbornatShere，onthe15thofNovember，1736。HewastheyoungestofthethreesonswhosurvivedtheirfatherEdwardBray，Esq。Georgetheeldest，whowasintheChurch，andthesecondsonEdward，whowasintheArmy，bothdiedunmarried；and，onthedeathofGeorgethesurvivor，in1803，Mr。BraysucceededtothepossessionoftheManorsofShereandGumshall，whichhadbelongedtohisancestorsfromthereignofHenrytheEighth。WhentenyearsoldhewasplacedatRugby，whereheremaineduntilhewasarticledtoMr。Martyr，anAttorneyofGuildford。In1761，hewasappointedaClerkoftheBoardofGreenCloth，atSt。James’s，throughthepatronageofSirJohnEvelyn。HisattendanceattheBoarddidnotpreventhispractisingasanAttorney，anditintroducedhimtomanyclients。In1777，hepublisheda’TourinDerbyshireandYorkshire，’andasecondeditionofitin1783。In1797，hewaschosenoneoftheCouncil，andafewyearsafterwardsTreasurer，oftheSocietyofAntiquaries，manyofhiscommunicationstowhichareprintedinthe’Archaeologia。’In1801，onthedeathoftheRevd。Mr。Manning，whohadbeenengagedforsomeyearsincompilingthe’HistoryofSurrey，’Mr。Brayundertooktocompletethework。Thefirstvolumewaspublishedin1804，thesecondin1809，andthethirdin1814。Hisnextandlastliteraryundertakingwastheeditingofthe’EvelynMemoirs，’whichhecompletedin1817。{1}Althoughinhis80thyear，hetranscribedinhisownhandwritingnearlythewholeofMr。Evelyn’sJournal。
Hediedfromweakness，andwithoutanydisorder，onthe21stofDecember，1832，havingenteredhis97thyearonthe15thoftheprecedingmonth。
Hishabitsbeforemarriagedidnotpromiseeitheranindustriousoraverylonglife。Hespentalmosteverynightatcards，andmanyofhismorningsinotheramusements。Afterhismarriagehebecamemoreattentivetohisprofessionalbusiness；buthecontinuedformanyyearstolivemorelikeabachelorthanamarriedman，spendingmostofhiseveningsinthesocietyofhisnumerousfriends，oratacoffee—house。Hewasveryhospitablebothinbedandboard，butintheplainestway。HissurplusincomewaslaidoutinpurchasesatShereandinplanting，andheleftnopersonalpropertyexcepthislifeinsurances。ThefamilyestatedevolvedonhisdeathtohisgrandsonEdward，wholivedatShere，anddiedin1866，attheageof72。
