notbecauseIwasquitesoweakastoconsiderthesenarrowcreaturesinterpretersoftheDivineMajestyandWisdom,butbecauseIwasweakenoughtofeelasthoughitweremyhardfortunetobemisrepresentedandmisunderstood,whenImosttriedtosubdueanyrisingsofmereworldlinesswithinme,andwhenImosthopedthat,bydintoftryingearnestly,Ihadsucceeded。

SEVENTHCHAPTER

MYtimidityandmyobscurityoccasionedmetoliveasecludedlifeatcollege,andtobelittleknown。Norelativeevercametovisitme,forIhadnorelative。Nointimatefriendsbrokeinuponmystudies,forImadenointimatefriends。Isupportedmyselfonmyscholarship,andreadmuch。MycollegetimewasotherwisenotsoverydifferentfrommytimeatHoghtonTowers。

seemtomyself,onlookingbacktothistimeofmylife,tohavebeenalwaysinthepeacefulshade。Icanseeothersinthesunlight;Icanseeourboats’crewsandourathleticyoungmenontheglisteningwater,orspeckledwiththemovinglightsofsunlitleaves;butImyselfamalwaysintheshadowlookingon。Notunsympathetically,—Godforbid!—butlookingonalone,muchasI

lookedatSylviafromtheshadowsoftheruinedhouse,orlookedattheredgleamshiningthroughthefarmer’swindows,andlistenedtothefallofdancingfeet,whenalltheruinwasdarkthatnightinthequadrangle。

Inowcometothereasonofmyquotingthatlaudationofmyselfabovegiven。Withoutsuchreason,torepeatitwouldhavebeenmereboastfulness。
