Afewdogsbarkedandranouttomeetthecavalcade,buttherewasnoothersignofanylifedisturbedorconcernedattheirapproach。

Shewastall,gaunt,andwithered;inspiteofherevidentyears,hertwistedhairwasstilldarkandfull,andhereyesbrightandpiercing;hercomplexionandteethhadlongsincesuccumbedtothevitiatingeffectsoffrontiercookery,andherlipswerestainedwiththeyellowjuiceofabrier—woodpipesheheldinhermouth。
