17。TheScarecrowWinstheFightAfterBillinahadenteredthepalaceDorothyandEvringsatdowntoawaitthesuccessorfailureofhermission,andtheNomeKingoccupiedhisthroneandsmokedhislongpipeforawhileinacheerfulandcontentedmood。

Thenthebellabovethethrone,whichsoundedwheneveranenchantmentwasbroken,begantoring,andtheKinggaveastartofannoyanceandexclaimed,\"Rocketty-ricketts!\"

WhenthebellrangasecondtimetheKingshoutedangrily,\"Smudgeandblazes!\"andatathirdringhescreamedinafury,\"Hippikaloric!\"

Instantlytheforemostwarriorsbecameeggs,whichrolleduponthefloorofthecaverninsuchnumbersthatthosebehindcouldnotadvancewithoutsteppinguponthem。But,whentheysawtheeggs,alldesiretoadvancedepartedfromthewarriors,andtheyturnedandfledmadlyintothecavern,andrefusedtogobackagain。

Ourfriendshadnofurthertroubleinreachingtheendofthepassage,andsoonwerestandingintheouterairuponthegloomypathbetweenthetwohighmountains。ButthewaytoEvlayplainlybeforethem,andtheyferventlyhopedthattheyhadseenthelastoftheNomeKingandofhisdreadfulpalace。
