TheoriginalattitudeoftheAmericanIndiantowardtheEternal,the\"GreatMystery\"thatsurroundsandembracesus,wasassimpleasitwasexalted。Tohimitwasthesupremeconception,bringingwithitthefullestmeasureofjoyandsatisfactionpossibleinthislife。

Theworshipofthe\"GreatMystery\"wassilent,solitary,freefromallself-seeking。Itwassilent,becauseallspeechisofnecessityfeebleandimperfect;thereforethesoulsofmyancestorsascendedtoGodinwordlessadoration。Itwassolitary,becausetheybelievedthatHeisnearertousinsolitude,andtherewerenopriestsauthorizedtocomebetweenamanandhisMaker。Nonemightexhortorconfessorinanywaymeddlewiththereligiousexperienceofanother。AmongusallmenwerecreatedsonsofGodandstooderect,asconsciousoftheirdivinity。Ourfaithmightnotbeformulatedincreeds,norforceduponanywhowereunwillingtoreceiveit;hencetherewasnopreaching,proselyting,norpersecution,neitherwerethereanyscoffersoratheists。
