EventhepracticalMr。Sperrywastakenaback。Theyoungmanbeforehimwassquarelybuilt,withbroadshoulders,andacertainairofmuscularactivity。Buthisface,althoughgood-humored,wasremarkableforofferingnottheslightestindicationofstudiouspreoccupationormentaltraining。Alargemouth,lightblueeyes,asquarejaw,theotherfeaturesbeingindistinctive——wereimmobileasamask——exceptthat,unlikeamask,theyseemedtoactuallyreflectthevacuityofthemoodwithin,insteadofconcealingit。

Butashesalutedthetrusteestheyeachhadthesamefeelingthateventhisexpressionwasimportedandnotinstinctive。Hisfacewasclean-shaven,andhishaircutsoshortastosuggestthatawigofsomekindwasnecessarytogiveitcharacteristicorevenordinaryhumansemblance。Hismanner,self-assuredyetlackingreality,andhisdressofrespectablecutandmaterial,yetwornasifitdidnotbelongtohim,completedapictureasunlikeastudentorschoolmasterascouldbepossiblyconceived。
