AndsowiththishonorofDaddyandMammy,thedaysoftheminerswerelongandprofitableinthelandofthefoot-hills。Theminesyieldedtheirabundance,thewintersweresingularlyopenandyettherewasnodrouthnorlackofwater,andpeaceandplentysmiledontheSierreanfoothills,fromtheirhighestsunnyuplandtothetrailingfaldaofwildoatsandpoppies。Ifacertainsuperstitiongotabroadamongtheothercamps,connectingthefortunesofRough-

Buttheunfortunateseamanwasmoreorlessdiseased,wasnotalwayspresentable,throughaweaknessforardentspirits,andfinally,tousethepowerfulidiomofoneofhisdisappointedfoster-children,\"upanddiedinaweek,withoutslingingaryblessin’。\"

Butvicissitudereachesyoungandoldalike。YouthfulRough-and-

conscious,maudlinimbecile,weknewthattheendhadcome。Thewifehehadabandonedhadinturndesertedhim;thewomanhehadmisledhadalreadyrealizedherfolly,andlefthimwithherreproaches;theassociatesofhisrecklesslife,whohadusedandabusedhim,hadfoundhimnolongerofservice,orevenamusement,andclearlytherewasnothinglefttodobuttohandhimovertothestate,andwetookhimtothenearestpenitentialasylum。
