Theygrippedrails,theyhadwoundropes’—endsundertheirarms;theyclutchedring—bolts,theycrawledinheapswheretherewasfoothold;theyheldonwithbotharms,hookedthemselvestoanythingtowindwardwithelbows,withchins,almostwiththeirteeth:andsome,unabletocrawlawayfromwheretheyhadbeenflung,feltthesealeapupstrikingagainsttheirbacksastheystruggledupwards。Singletonhadstucktothewheel。Hishairflewoutinthewind;thegaleseemedtotakeitslife—longadversarybythebeardandshakehisoldhead。Hewouldn’tletgo,and,withhiskneesforcedbetweenthespokes,flewupanddownlikeamanonabough。

Whenabovethesideofthehouse,theyletgooneafteranother,andfallingheavily,sprawled,pressingtheirpalmstothesmoothteakwood。Roundthemthebackwashofwavesseethedwhiteandhissing。
