ColonelMcIntyrehadnotgoneatoncetoseehisdaughterHelen,asBarbarahadsupposedfromhisremark,insteadhewentdownthestaircaseandintothereceptionroomonthegroundfloor。Itwasgenerallyusedasasmokingroomandlounge,butwhenentertainingwasdone,cloaksandwrapswereleftthere。McIntyrelookedovertheprettilyupholsteredfurniture,thenstrolledtothewindowandcarefullyinspectedthelock;itappearedinperfectorderashetestedit。Pushingthecatchbackasfarasitwouldgo,heraisedthewindow—thesashmovedupwardwithoutasound,andheleanedoutandlookedupanddownthepathwhichranthedepthofthehousetothekitchendoorandservants’entrance。

Therewasanirongateseparatingthepathfromthesidewalk,alwayskeptlockedatnight,andMcIntyrehadthoughtthatsufficientprotectionandhadnotputanirongrilleinthewindow。

McIntyreclosedandlockedthewindow,thenpullingoutthegiltchairwhichstoodinfrontofthedesk,hesatdown,selectedsomemonogrammedpaperandpennedafewlinesinhischaracteristicthoughlegiblewriting。Pickingupsomeredsealingwax,helightedthesmallcandleinitsbrassholderwhichmatchedtherestofthedeskornaments,butbeforeheatingthewaxhelookedforhissignetring,andfrownedwhenherecalledleavingitonhisdresser。

Hehesitatedamoment,thencatchingsightofasilverseallyingatthebackofthedeskhepickeditupandmoistenedtheinitial。
