StillIdroveonthroughthickandthin，till，passingoverthatgreatobelisk，theNeedleofCleopatra，theworkgotentangledagain，andjoltedatamiserablerateoverthemudandswampygroundofallthatcountry;yetmypoorbullstrottedonwithastonishinglabouracrosstheIsthmusofSuezintotheRedSea，andleftatrack，anobscurechannel，whichhassincebeentakenbyDeTottfortheremainsofacanalcutbysomeofthePtolemiesfromtheRedSeatotheMediterranean;but，asyouperceive，wasinrealitynomorethanthetrackofmychariot，thecarofQueenMab。
Astheartistsatpresentinthatcountryarenothingwonderful，thoughtheancientEgyptians，’tissaid，weremostastonishingfellows，Icouldnotprocureanynewcoach—springs，orhaveapossibilityofsettingmymachinetorightsinthekingdomofEgypt;

Andreally，myfriends，ifAlexanderhadventuredtowardtheCapeofGoodHopehemostprobablywouldhaveneverreturned。ItisdifficulttodeterminewhethertherewerethenanyinhabitantsinthemoresouthernpartsofAfricaornot;yet，atanyrate，thisconqueroroftheworldwouldhavemadebutanonsensicaladventure;hismiserableships，notcontrivedforalongvoyage，wouldhavebecomeleaky，andfoundered，beforehecouldhavedoubledtheCape，andlefthisMajestyfairlybeyondthelimitsofthethenknownworld。YetitwouldhavebeenanaugustexitforanAlexander，afterhavingsubduedPersiaandIndia，tobewanderingtheLordknowswhere，toJuporAmmon，perhaps，oronavoyagetothemoon，asanIndianchiefoncesaidtoCaptainCook。
But，formypart，IwasfarmoresuccessfulthanAlexander;Idroveonwiththemostamazingrapidity，andthinkingtohaltonshoreattheCape，Iunfortunatelydrovetooclose，andshatteredtherightsidewheelsofmyvehicleagainsttherock，nowcalledtheTableMountain。
Themachinewentagainstitwithsuchimpetuosityascompletelyshiveredtherockinahorizontaldirection;sothatthesummitofthemountain，intheformofasemi—sphere，wasknockedintothesea，andthesteepmountainbecomingtherebyflattenedatthetop，hassincereceivedthenameoftheTableMountain，fromitssimilaritytothatpieceoffurniture。
Justasthispartofthemountainwasknockedoff，theghostoftheCape，thattremendousspritewhichcutssuchafigureintheLusiad，wasdiscoveredsittingsquatinanexcavationformedforhiminthecentreofthemountain。Heseemedjustlikeayoungbeeinhislittlecellbeforehecomesforth，orlikeabeaninabean—pod;andwhentheupperpartofthemountainwassplitacrossandknockedoff，thesuperiorhalfofhispersonwasdiscovered。Heappearedofabottle—

Wehadnotproceededthusmanyweeks，advancingwithincrediblefatiguebycontinualtowing，whenwefellinwithafleetofNegro—
