InthecourseofacopiouscorrespondencewithLudlow,theobservationsIhadcollectedweregiven。Asentiment,whichIcanhardlydescribe,inducedmetobesilentonalladventuresconnectedwithmybivocalprojects。Onothertopics,Iwrotefully,andwithoutrestraint。Ipainted,invividhues,thesceneswithwhichIwasdailyconversant,andpursued,fearlessly,everyspeculationonreligionandgovernmentthatoccurred。ThisspiritwasencouragedbyLudloe,whofailednottocommentonmynarrative,andmultiplydeductionsfrommyprinciples。

Hetaughtmetoascribetheevilsthatinfestsocietytotheerrorsofopinion。Theabsurdandunequaldistributionofpowerandpropertygavebirthtopovertyandriches,andthesewerethesourcesofluxuryandcrimes。Thesepositionswerereadilyadmitted;buttheremedyfortheseills,themeansofrectifyingtheseerrorswerenoteasilydiscovered。Wehavebeeninclinedtoimputethemtoinherentdefectsinthemoralconstitutionofmen:

InanswertothereveriesandspeculationswhichIsenttohimrespectingthissubject,Ludloeinformedme,thattheyhadledhismindintoanewsphereofmeditation。Hehadlonganddeeplyconsideredinwhatwayhemightessentiallypromotemyhappiness。
