5。Havingpoundedthewhiteunripegrapeinamortarofredbronze,andpasseditthroughthestrainer,exposeittothesunduringtheday,butremoveitduringthenight,thatitmaynotsufferfromthedew;rubitconstantlyduringtheday,sothatitmaydryequally,andmaycontractasmuchvirtueaspossiblefromthebronze:letitbeexposedtothesunforasgreatalengthoftimeastillitacquirethethicknessofhoney;thenputitintoabronzepotwiththefreshhoneyandsweetwine,inwhichturpentineresinhasbeenpreviouslyboiled,boiltheresininthewineuntilitbecomehardlikeboiledhoney;thentakeouttheresinandpouroffthewine:

thereshouldbethegreatestproportionofthejuiceofunripegrape,nextofthewine,andthirdofthehoneyandmyrrh,eithertheliquid(stacte)orotherwise。Thefinestkindistobelevigatedandmoistenedbyhavingasmallquantityofthesamewinepouredonit;andthenthemyrrhistobeboiledbyitself,stirringitinthewine;andwhenitappearstohaveattainedtheproperdegreeofthickness,itistobepouredintothejuiceoftheunripegrape;

andthefinestnatronistobetoasted,andgentlyaddedtothemedicine,alongwithasmallerquantityoftheflowersofcopper(flosaeris)thanofthenatron。Whenyouhavemixedthesethings,boilfornotlessthanthreedays,onagentlefiremadewithfuelofthefig-treeorwithcoals,lestitcatchfire。Theapplicationsshouldallbefreefrommoisture,andthesoresshouldnotbewettedwhenthismedicineisappliedintheformofliniment。Thismedicineistobeusedforoldulcers,andalsoforrecentwoundsoftheglanspenis,andulcersontheheadandears。Anothermedicineforthesameulcers:-Thedriedgallofanox,thefinesthoney,whitewine,inwhichtheshavingsofthelotushavebeenboiled,frankincense,ofmyrrhanequalpart,ofsaffronanequalpart,theflowersofcopper,inlikemannerofliquids,thegreatestproportionofwine,nextofhoney,andleastofthegall。Another:-Wine,alittlecedarhoney,ofdriedthings,theflowersofcopper,myrrh,driedpomegranaterind。Another:-Oftheroastedflowerofcopperhalfadrachm,ofmyrrhtwohalf-drachms,ofsaffronthreedrachms,ofhoneyasmallquantity,tobeboiledwithwine。Another:-Offrankincenseadrachm,ofgalladrachm,ofsaffronthreedrachms;leteachofthesebedriedandfinelylevigated,then,havingmixed,triturateinaverystrongsun,pouringinthejuiceofanunripegrape,untilitbecomeofagelatinousconsistence,forthreedays;

thenletthembeallowedtomacerateinanaustere,dark-colored,fragrantwine,whichisgraduallypoureduponthem。Another:-Boiltherootsoftheholmoakinsweetwhitewine;andwhenitappearstobeproperlydone,havingpouredofftwopartsofthewine,andoftheleesofwineasfreeofwateraspossibleonepart;thenboil,stirringit,sothatitmaynotbeburnt,atagentlefire,untilitappeartohaveattainedtheproperconsistence。Another:-Theotherthingsaretobethesame;but,notwithstanding,insteadofthewine,usethestrongestwhitevinegar,anddipintoitwoolasgreasyascanbeprocured,andthen,moisteningitwiththeleesofoil,boil,andpourinthejuiceofthewildfig-tree,andaddMelianalum,andnatron,andtheflowersofcopper,bothtoasted。Thiscleansestheulcersbetterthantheformer,buttheotherisnolessdesiccant。

Another:-Dipthewoolinaverylittlewater;andthen,havingaddedathirdpartofwine,boiluntilitattaintheproperconsistence。Bythese,recentulcersaremostspeedilypreventedfromgettingintoastateofsuppuration。

6。Another:-Sprinkleonitdriedwakerobin,andaddthegreenbarkofthefig-tree,poundingitinthejuice:dothiswithorwithoutwine,andalongwithhoney。Another:-Boilingtheshavingsoflotuswithvinegar(thevinegarshouldbewhite);thenmixtheleesofoilandrawtar-water,anduseitasalinimentorwash,andbandageabove。Thesethingsinpowderpreventrecentwoundsfromsuppurating,ortheymaybeusedforcleansingthesorealongwithvinegar,orforspongingwithwine。

7。Another:-Sprinkle(onthesore?)leadfinelytrituratedwiththerecrementofcopper;andsprinkleonit,also,theshavingsoflotus,andthescalesofcopper,andalum,andchalcitis,withcopper,bothalone,andwiththeshavingsoflotus。Andotherwise,whenitiswantedtousetheseinadrystate,doitwiththeIllyrianspodostrituratedwiththeshavings,andwiththeshavingsalone。

8。Theherbwhichhasgotthenameoflagopyrus,fillsuphollowandcleanulcers;(whendrieditresembleswheat;ithasasmallleaflikethatoftheolive,andmorelong;)andtheleafofhorehound,withoil。Another:-Theinternalfattypart,resemblinghoney,ofafigmuchdried,ofwatertwoparts,oflinseednotmuchtoastedandfinelylevigated,onepart。Another:-Ofthedriedfig,oftheflowerofcopperlevigatedalittle,andthejuiceofthefig。Thepreparationfromdriedfig:-Theblackchamaeleon,thedriedgallofanox,theotherthingsthesame。Ofthepowders:-Oftheslendercressinarawstate,ofhorehound,ofeachequalparts;ofthedriedfig,twoparts;

oflinseed,twoparts;thejuiceofthefig。Whenyouuseanyofthesemedicines,applyaboveitcompresseswettedinvinegar,applyaspongeaboutthecompressesandmakeaIfthesurroundingpartsbeinaninflamedstate,applytothemanymedicinewhichmayappearsuitable。

9。Ifyouwishtousealiquidapplication,themedicinecalledcaricummayberubbedin,andthebandagesmaybeappliedasformerlydescribeduponthesameprinciple。Themedicineispreparedofthefollowingingredients:-Ofblackhellebore,ofsandarach,oftheflakesofcopper,ofleadwashed,withmuchsulphur,arsenic,andcantharides。Thismaybecompoundedsoasmaybejudgedmostproper,anditistobedilutedwithoilofjuniper。Whenenoughhasbeenrubbedin,layasidethemedicine,andapplyboiledwakerobininasoftstate,eitherrubbingitindry,ormoisteningitwithhoney。Butifyouusethecaricuminadrystate,youmustabstainfromthesethings,andsprinklethemedicineonthesore。Thepowderfromhelleboreandsandarachaloneanswers。Anotherliquidmedicine:-Theherb,theleafofwhichresemblesthearum(wakerobin)innature,butiswhite,downy,ofthesizeoftheivy-leaf:thisherbisappliedwithwine,orthesubstancewhichformsuponthebranchesoftheilex,whenpoundedwithwine,istobeapplied。Another:-Thejuiceofthegrape,thestrongestvinegar,theflowerofcopper,natron,thejuiceofthewildfig-tree。Alum,themostfinelylevigated,istobeputintothejuiceofthewildgrape,anditistobeputintoaredbronzemortarandstirredinthesun,andremovedwhenitappearstohaveattainedproperconsistence。

10。Theseareotherpowders:-Blackhellebore,asfinelylevigatedaspossible,istobesprinkledonthesorewhileanyhumidityremainsaboutit,andwhileitcontinuestospread。Thebandagingisthesameaswhenplastersareused。Another,inlikemanner:-Thedriestlumpsofsaltaretobeputintoacopper,orearthenpot,ofequalsize,asmuchaspossible,andnotlarge,andthefinesthoney,ofdoublethesizeofthesalt,asfarascanbeguessed,istobepoureduponthelumpsofsalt,thenthevesselistobeputuponcoalsandallowedtositthereuntilthewholeisconsumed。Then,havingspongedtheulcerandcleansedit,bandageitasbefore,andcompressitalittlemore。Nextday,whereverthemedicinehasnotbeentakenin,sprinkleiton,pressitdown,andbandage。Butwhenyouwishtoremovethemedicine,pourinhotvinegaruntilitseparate,andagaindothesamethings,spongingitaway,ifnecessary。Anothercorrosivepowder:-Ofthemostfinely-levigatedmisy,sprinkleuponthemoistandgangrenousparts,andalittleoftheflowerofcopper,notaltogetherlevigated。Anotherpowderequallycorrosive:-Havingspongedtheulcer,burnthemostgreasywooluponashellplacedonthefireuntilthewholebeconsumed;havingreducedthistoafinepowder,andsprinkleditonthesore,applythebandageinthesamemanner。Anotherpowderforthesameulcers:-Theblackchamaeleon,whenpreparedwiththejuiceofthefig。Itistobepreparedroasted,andalkanetmixedwithit。Or,pimpernel,andEgyptianalumroasted,andsprinkleonthemtheOrchomenianpowder。Forspreadingulcers:-Alum,boththeEgyptianroasted,andtheMelian;butthepartistobefirstcleansedwithroastednatronandsponged;andthespeciesofalumcalledchalcitisroasted。Itistoberoasteduntilitcatchfire。
