13。ForBurns:-Youmustboilthetenderrootsoftheilex,andiftheirbarkbeverythickandgreen,itmustbecutintosmallparts,andhavingpouredinwhitewine,boiluponagentlefire,untilitappeartoyoutobeoftheproperconsistence,soastobeusedforaliniment。Anditmaybepreparedinwaterafterthesamemanner。

Another,notcorrosive:-Oldswine\'sseamistoberubbedinbyitself,anditistobemeltedalongwithsquill,therootofwhichistobedividedandappliedwithabandage。Nextdayitistobefomented;andhavingmeltedoldswine\'sseamandwax,andmixedwiththemoil,frankincense,andtheshavingsoflotusandvermilion,thisistobeusedasaliniment。Havingboiledtheleavesofthewakerobininwineandoil,applyabandage。Another:-Whenyouhavesmearedthepartswitholdswine\'sseamlettherootsofasphodelbepoundedinwineandtriturated,andrubbedin。Another:-Havingmeltedoldswine\'sseam,andmixedwithresinandbitumen,andhavingspreaditonapieceofclothandwarmeditatthefire,applyabandage。Whenanulcerhasformedonthebackfromstripesorotherwise,letsquill,twiceboiled,bepoundedandspreaduponalinenclothandboundontheplace。Afterwardthegreaseofagoat,andfreshswine\'sseam,spodium,oil,andfrankincensearetoberubbedin。

14。Swellingswhichariseonthefeet,eitherspontaneouslyorotherwise,whenneithertheswellingsnortheinflammationsubsideundertheuseofcataplasms,andalthoughspongesorwool,oranythingelsebebounduponthesoundpart;buttheswellingandinflammationreturnofthemselvesagain,aninfluxofbloodintotheveinsisthecause,whennotoccasionedbyabruise。Andthesamestoryappliesifthishappeninanyotherpartofthebody。Butbloodistobeabstracted,especiallythefromtheveins,whicharetheseatoftheinflux,iftheybeconspicuous;butifnot,deeperandmorenumerousscarificationsaretobemadeintheswellings;andwhateverpartyouscarify,thisistobedonewiththesharpestandmostslenderinstrumentsofiron。Whenyouhaveremovedtheblood,youmustnotpressharduponthepartwiththespecillum,lestyouproducecontusion。Bathewithvinegar,anddonotallowaclotofbloodtoremainbetweenthelipsofthewounds,andhavingspreadgreasywoolwithamedicineforbloodywounds,andhavingcardedthewoofandmadeitsoft,binditon,havingwetteditwithwineandoil。Andletthescarifiedpartbesoplacedthatthedeterminationofthebloodmaybeupwardandnotdownward;anddonotwetthepartatall,andletthepatientbeputuponarestricteddietanddrinkwater。Ifuponloosingthebandagesyoufindthescarificationsinflamed,applyacataplasmofthefruitofthechaste-treeandlinseed。Butifthescarificationsbecomeulceratedandbreakintooneanother,wemustberegulatedbycircumstances,andotherwiseapplywhateverelseappearstobeproper。

15。Whenavarixisontheforepartoftheleg,andisverysuperficial,orbelowtheflesh,andthelegisblack,andseemstostandinneedofhavingthebloodevacuatedfromit,suchswellingsarenot,byanymeans,tobecutopen;for,generally,largeulcersaretheconsequenceoftheincisions,owingtotheinfluxfromthevarix。Butthevarixitselfistobepuncturedinmanyplaces,ascircumstancesmayindicate。

16。Whenyouhaveopenedaveinandabstractedblood,andalthoughthefilletbeloosedthebleedingdoesnotstop,themember,whetherthearmorleg,istobeputintothereversepositiontothatfromwhichthebloodflows;sothatthebloodmayflowbackward,anditistobeallowedtoremaininthispositionforagreaterorlessspaceoftime。Thenbindupthepartwhilemattersareso,noclotsofbloodbeingallowedtoremainintheopening。Thenhavingappliedadoublecompress,andwetteditwithwine,applyaboveitcleanwoolwhichhasbeensmearedwithoil。For,althoughtheflowofbloodbeviolent,itwillbestoppedinthisway。Ifathrombusbeformedintheopening,itwillinflameandsuppurate。Venesectionistobepracticedwhenthepersonhasdinedmoreorlessfreelyanddrunk,andwhensomewhatheated,andratherinhotweatherthanincold。

17。Whenincupping,thebloodcontinuestoflowafterthecupping-instrumenthasbeenremoved,andiftheflowofblood,orserumbecopious,theinstrumentistobeappliedagainbeforethepartishealedup,soastoabstractwhatisleftbehind。Otherwisecoagulaofbloodwillberetainedintheincisionsandinflammatoryulcerswillarisefromthem。Inallsuchcasesthepartsaretobebathedwithvinegar,afterwhichtheyarenottobewetted;neithermustthepersonlieuponthescarifications,buttheyaretobeanointedwithsomeofthemedicinesforbloodywounds。Whenthecuppinginstrumentistobeappliedbelowtheknee,orattheknee,itshouldbedone,ifpossible,whilethemanstandserect。
