Itwasadistressingtime;andpoorJerushaAbbott,beingtheoldestorphan,hadtobearthebruntofit。ButthisparticularfirstWednesday,likeitspredecessors,finallydraggeditselftoaclose。Jerushaescapedfromthepantrywhereshehadbeenmakingsandwichesfortheasylum’sguests,andturnedupstairstoaccomplishherregularwork。HerspecialcarewasroomF,whereelevenlittletots,fromfourtoseven,occupiedelevenlittlecotssetinarow。Jerushaassembledhercharges,straightenedtheirrumpledfrocks,wipedtheirnoses,andstartedtheminanorderlyandwillinglinetowardsthedining-roomtoengagethemselvesforablessedhalfhourwithbreadandmilkandprunepudding。

Thenshedroppeddownonthewindowseatandleanedthrobbingtemplesagainstthecoolglass。Shehadbeenonherfeetsincefivethatmorning,doingeverybody’sbidding,scoldedandhurriedbyanervousmatron。

Mrs。Lippett,behindthescenes,didnotalwaysmaintainthatcalmandpompousdignitywithwhichshefacedanaudienceofTrusteesandladyvisitors。Jerushagazedoutacrossabroadstretchoffrozenlawn,beyondthetallironpalingthatmarkedtheconfinesoftheasylum,downundulatingridgessprinkledwithcountryestates,tothespiresofthevillagerisingfromthemidstofbaretrees。

Inimaginationshefollowedfirstoneequipage,thenanother,tothebighousesdottedalongthehillside。Shepicturedherselfinafurcoatandavelvethattrimmedwithfeathersleaningbackintheseatandnonchalantlymurmuring`Home’tothedriver。
