ThereappearanceofChiversinthemillwithCollinson,andthebriefannouncementthattheprisonerhadconsentedtoasatisfactorycompromise,werereceivedatfirstwithahalfcontemptuoussmilebytheparty;butforthecommandsoftheirleaders,andpossiblyaconvictionthatCollinson’sfatuouscooperationwithChiverswouldbesaferthanhiswrath,whichmightnotexpenditselfonlyonChivers,butimperilthesafetyofall,itisprobablethattheywouldhaveinformedtheunfortunateprisonerofhisrealrelationstohiscaptor。Inthesecircumstances,Chivers’shalfsatiricalsuggestionthatCollinsonshouldbeaddedtothesentriesoutside,andguardhisownproperty,wassurlilyassentedtobyRiggs,andcomplacentlyacceptedbytheothers。Chiversofferedtoposthimhimself,——notwithoutaninterchangeofmeaningglanceswithRiggs,——Collinson’sowngunwasreturnedtohim,andthestrangelyassortedpairleftthemillamicablytogether。
