Thenearlylevelsunwas,afteritsoldfashion,alreadyhangingtheshadowedtasselsofthepineboughslikeagarlandonthewall。

Buttheshadowseemedtohavesuddenlygrownlargerandmorecompact,andheturned,withaquickconsciousnessofsomeinterposingfigureatthepane。Nothinghoweverwastobeseen。

Hiswaylaythroughthefirstbeltofpinestowardsthemining-
