Themasterawokethenextmorning,albeitafterarestlessnight,withthatclarityofconscienceandperceptionwhichitistobefearedismoreoftentheconsequenceofyouthandaperfectcirculationthanofanymoralconvictionorintegrity。Hearguedwithhimselfthatastheonlypartyreallyaggrievedintheincidentofthepreviousnight,therightofremedyremainedwithhimsolely,andunderthebenigninfluenceofanearlybreakfastandthefreshmorningairhewasinclinedtofeellesssternlyeventowardsSethDavis。Inanyevent,hemustfirstcarefullyweightheevidenceagainsthim,andexaminethesceneoftheoutrageclosely。Forthispurpose,hehadstartedfortheschool-housefullyanhourbeforehisusualtime。Hewasevenlight-heartedenoughtorecognizethehumorousaspectofUncleBen’sappealtohim,andhisownludicrouslyparadoxicalattitude,andasheatlastpassedfromthedrearyflatintothefringeofuplandpines,hewassmiling。Wellforhim,perhaps,thathewasnomoreaffectedbyanypremonitionofthedaybeforehimthanthelatelyawakenedbirdsthatlightlycutthestillsleepingwoodsaroundhimintheirlongflashingsabre-curvesofflight。Ayellow-throat,destinedtobecomethebreakfastofalazyhawkstillswingingabovetheriver,wasespeciallymovedtosuchacauselessandidioticrouladeofmirththatthemasterlisteningtothefoolishbirdwasfaintowhistletoo。Hepresentlystopped,however,withaslightembarrassment。ForafewpacesbeforehimCressyhadunexpectedlyappeared。

Itwasnotuntilhereachedtheschoolhousethattheevidencesoflastnight’soutrageforatimedistractedhismindfromhissingularinterview。Hewasstruckwiththeworkmanlikemannerinwhichthelockshadbeenrestored,andthecarethathadevidentlybeentakentoremovethemoreobviousandbrutaltracesofburglary。ThissomewhatstaggeredhistheorythatSethDaviswastheperpetrator;mechanicalskillandthoughtfulnesswerenotamongthelout’scharacteristics。Buthewasstillmoredisconcertedonpushingbackhischairtofindasmallindia-rubbertobaccopouchlyingbeneathit。Themasterinstantlyrecognizedit:hehadseenitahundredtimesbefore——itwasUncleBen’s。Itwasnottherewhenhehadclosedtheroomyesterdayafternoon。EitherUncleBenhadbeentherelastnight,orhadanticipatedhimthismorning。

Butinthelattercasehewouldscarcelyhaveoverlookedhisfallenproperty——that,inthedarknessofthenight,mighthavereadilyescapeddetection。HisbrowdarkenedwithasuddenconvictionthatitwasUncleBenwhowastherealandonlyoffender,andthathissimplicityofthepreviousnightwaspartofhisdeception。A

sickeningsensethathehadbeenagainduped——butwhyortowhatpurposehehardlydaredtothink——overcamehim。Whoamongthesestrangepeoplecouldheeveragaintrust?Afterthefashionofmoreelevatedindividuals,hehadacceptedtherespectandkindnessofthosehebelievedhisinferiorsasanaturaltributetohisownsuperiority;anychangeinTHEIRfeelingsmustthereforebehypocrisyordisloyalty;itneveroccurredtohimthatHEmighthavefallenbelowtheirstandard。

Mondaymorninghadcomeagain,andthemasterwasathisdeskintheschoolhouseearly,withastilldampandinkycopyoftheStarfreshfromthepressbeforehim。Thefreebreathofthepineswasblowinginthewindow,andbringingtohisearsthedistantvoicesofhisslowlygatheringflock,ashereadasfollows:——
