ItwasononeoftheseautumndayswithawintrynipintheairthatAdamLadd(Rebecca’sfavorite\"Mr。Aladdin\"),aftersearchingforherinfieldandgarden,suddenlynoticedtheopendoorsofthebarnchamber,andcalledtoher。Atthesoundofhisviceshedroppedherpreciousdiary,andflewtotheedgeofthehaymow。Heneverforgotthevisionofthestartledlittlepoetess,bookinonemittenedhand,pencilintheother,darkhairallruffled,withthepicturesqueadditionofanoccasionalgladeofstraw,hercheekscrimson,hereyesshining。

Now,allbeingready,Rebeccawenttoacornerofthehaymow,andwithdrewathickblank-bookwithmottledcovers。Outofherginghamapronpocketcameapencil,abitofrubber,andsomepiecesofbrownpaper;thensheseatedherselfgravelyonthefloor,anddrewaninvertedsoapboxnearertoherforatable。
