Undertheinfluenceofagreatmentalandmoralupheaval,hischaracterandhishabitshadtakenontheappearanceofcompletechange,butafterawhilewiththesubsidenceofthestorm,bothbegantosettletowardtheirformerplaces。Hedroppedgraduallybackintohisoldfrivolousandeasygoingwaysandconditionsoffeelingandmannerofspeech,andnofamiliarofhiscouldhavedetectedanythinginhimthatdifferentiatedhimfromtheweakandcarelessTomofotherdays。

Thevisitorwasagood—natured,ignorant,energeticmiddle—agedIrishmannamedJohnBuckstone,whowasagreatpoliticianinasmallway,andalwaystookalargeshareinpublicmattersofeverysort。Oneofthetown’schiefexcitements,justnow,wasoverthematterofrum。Therewasastrongrumpartyandastronganti—rumparty。Buckstonewastrainingwiththerumparty,andhehadbeensenttohuntupthetwinsandinvitethemtoattendamassmeetingofthatfaction。Hedeliveredhiserrand,andsaidtheclanswerealreadygatheringinthebighalloverthemarkethouse。
